I’ve always been fascinated by how light can change the mood of a scene or the impression of a person.

At 19, I’ve been given the opportunity to capture field photography for soldiers of the Singapore Armed Forces during my National Service term. I’ve worked in some of harshest conditions imaginable under the sun, rain and mud. The joke has always been, while soldiers carry a rifle hug it to sleep, I carry my camera and keep it by my side dearly.

As a young photographer, I was fortunate to receive international recognition from an esteemed panel of judges when a photo essay series (‘Never Look Back’) I shot in army made it to the Official Selection category of the International Photography Awards in 2009. But the honor was not as rewarding as seeing the expression of the soldiers when they receive a copy of a photo book which compiled part of my work at the end of every Singaporean son’s National Service term. The photos represent memories from a rite of passage they could share with their family and spouses.

The most important gift a good portrait photographer is able to give you is to help you look at your best. Most people who believe they weren’t photogenic in front of a camera are pleasantly surprised how good they look after a portrait session with me. My secret? A long lens to flatter your features and a good sense of humour.

Outside of commissioned work for portraiture and editorial assignments, I’m currently doing benefit gigs for young emerging fashion designers as I’m keen to push my craft further as an artist, while giving back to the creative community.
